It is the average blood glucose level of the past 3 months. It is measured as a percentage.
Glucose attaches to hemoglobin in red blood cells, forming HbA1c. As red cells live 120 days, the test reflects average sugar over 2–3 months. Normally, 5% of hemoglobin is glycosylated, giving an HbA1c around 5%.
Check HbA1c every 3 months, or every 6 months if your sugar is stable. It helps your doctor assess your diet, exercise, and medicine. Though not for daily use, it gives a good long-term view of sugar control.
HbA1c doesn’t replace daily sugar checks or guide insulin doses. Abnormal hemoglobin can affect results. Still, it’s a key test. Target: Normal = 4.5–5.5%, Prediabetes = 5.6–6.5%, Diabetes ≥ 6.5%.
