HYPOGLYCEMIA

HEALTH FACILITIES

What is Hypoglycemia

It means very low blood glucose level. Blood glucose level <70mg/dl requires management. If it goes untreated you can become unconscious. Frequent hypoglycemia episodes show that you need to revise your treatment.

When blood sugar drops, you may feel trembling, sweating, irritability, hunger, blurred vision, or tingling. Severe drops can lead to confusion, seizure, or unconsciousness if not treated quickly.

Check blood sugar if symptoms appear—if it’s below 70 mg/dL, treat it. If no glucometer is available, treat based on signs. Those around you should know how to recognize and respond to symptoms.

Eat 15g fast-acting carbs like juice, sugar, or candy. Recheck after 15 minutes and repeat if still low. Always carry a glucagon injection. If unconscious, go to the ER for IV glucose immediately.

Caution !

Do not insert any liquid or solid food in the mouth of an unconscious patient, as he/she can choke Always check blood sugar before driving or operating heavy machinery, as hypoglycemia can cause fatal accidents if the patient is not fully alert. If blood glucose is low, eat a carbohydrate snack before driving.

If not treated, hypoglycemia can lead to fainting, coma, or even brain damage. The brain needs glucose to function, so prolonged low levels can be life-threatening without quick treatment.

After years of diabetes, you may no longer feel low sugar symptoms. This is dangerous. Regular glucose checks help detect it. Discuss with your doctor and ensure those around you can act quickly.

All diabetic patients should wear a medical ID or carry a card. It must state their condition, medicines, and emergency steps. This helps others respond correctly if the patient becomes unconscious.
